Signs of Honour Based Abuse

If you suspect honour-based abuse could be happening to someone you know it is important, you know what to look out for.  Below are some of the signs to be aware of.

  • Sudden changes in behaviour – is the person acting withdrawn or upset
  • Excessive control or monitoring by family members – movements being excessively controlled, having their technology withdrawn or social media monitored
  • Fear of upcoming trips abroad
  • Reluctance to discuss family matters
  • Unexplained absences – poor attendance or performance at school or work
  • Withdrawal – depression, self-harm or attempted suicide.
  • Evidence of physical abuse or trauma
  • Rumours/ concerns

If you are concerned about any person’s immediate welfare you must report the matter straightaway. This can be to the police or to someone in authority, i.e. a teacher.
