James Clacher jailed for sexual offences after being traced abroad
A 57-year-old man who fled abroad after being accused of sexual offences has been sentenced to eight years in prison.
James Clacher, who was reported missing from Bellshill in May 2022, was traced in Spain in May 2024 and arrested on an international warrant before being returned to Scotland to face trial.
He was found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday, 3 September, 2025, of the serious sexual assault of two women in August 2019 and September 2020.
He was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh on Wednesday, 1 October, 2025, to eight years in prison. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register and given a 10-year non-harassment order.
Detective Inspector Bruce Fyfe said: "It is very difficult to comprehend the distress and suffering that Clacher's actions have caused. We hope this sentencing will bring his victims some form of comfort and closure as he faces the consequences of his appalling actions.
"Extensive enquiries were carried out after Clacher was reported missing, with support from specialist units including the Dog Branch, Marine Unit, Financial Investigation Unit and Air Support Unit. However, it later became clear that he had faked his death and left the country in an attempt to evade justice.
"Through close cooperation with international law enforcement colleagues, including the National Crime Agency and Spanish Police, he was extradited back to Scotland to stand trial. I hope this case clearly demonstrates our commitment to investigation such serious crimes and pursuing those who try to evade prosecution, no matter where they go.
"If anyone is experiencing or has experienced any type of sexual abuse, please report it and be assured that we will investigate fully. We have specially trained officers who will support you throughout and work closely with partner agencies to ensure you receive all the support you need."
