Man found guilty of dangerous driving following fatal crash in Cumbernauld
A 31-year-old man has been found guilty of death by dangerous driving after a crash in Cumbernauld in 2023.
Leigh Sutherland appeared at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday, 7 October, 2025 and was found guilty of causing the death of 77-year-old Margaret Allan.
Sutherland was driving a Ford Mondeo when he crashed with a Peugeot 108 around 3.05pm on Thursday, 15 June, 2023, at the Condorrat Ring Road.
Margaret, who was driving the Peugeot, was taken by ambulance to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary where she died on Thursday, 6 July, 2023.
A 10-year-old male passenger in the Peugeot car was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital Monklands for treatment.
Sutherland was remanded in custody pending sentencing on 2 December, 2025.
He had been banned from driving for six months just one week before the collision and tried to leave the scene without giving his details to police officers.
Sergeant Andy Coutts, North Lanarkshire Roads Policing said: "Our thoughts remain with Margaret's family, who have been dignified and strong throughout this tragic ordeal.
"Sutherland's actions showed a blatant disregard for other road users and the law, and since the incident he has showed no remorse.
"We hope the court’s decision brings some peace to the family."
