Police Scotland confirm disposal of Ferguslie Park police station
Plans to dispose of Ferguslie Park police station following public consultation have been approved by Police Scotland.
Ferguslie Park has not been open to the public for over ten years and response officers, those officers who respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents in the area, have always been based in Paisley police station. There will be no change in how incidents are responded to or the level of service provided to the local community.
Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Rhona Fraser said: “I understand that for many, the physical presence of a police station can be a source of reassurance. However, effective policing is about people not buildings, it is defined by the officers and staff who serve the community. Police stations serve as a base for officers, where they begin and end their shift. Our officers spend the majority of their shift working out in the community.
“Ferguslie Park is two miles from Paisley police station and three miles from Johnstone police station. Maintaining three buildings so close together is not necessary for operational requirements or financially sustainable. By merging resources, we can ensure our focus remains on delivering frontline policing and enhancing community safety, rather retaining underutilised buildings.
“In the past, having multiple stations in close proximity was beneficial due to the lack of modern technology. Today, officers are fully mobile, equipped with advanced technology, including fleet and mobile devices, allowing them to patrol and respond effectively without relying on a fixed location.
“For operational reasons, community police officers were moved from Ferguslie Park to Johnstone police station on Tuesday, 24 September, 2024 as part of a new shift pattern for officers. This has enabled our officers to work as part of a bigger team, remaining focussed on local prevention work, within the local community.
“Disposing of a building does not mean a withdrawal from the community. It is a key step in our Estate Masterplan, modernising and investing in police facilities to better support the needs of modern policing. Our commitment remains the same, with officers continuing to provide a visible and high-quality service.”
“Paisley police station front counter is open 24 hours, Monday to Sunday. Johnstone police station front counter is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. For non-emergencies and general enquiries, members of the public can call 101, and 999 in the event of an emergency.”
