New recruits join Police Scotland for a job like no other
Members of Police Scotland’s Chief Officer Team thanked the latest cadre of probationary constables for stepping forward to keep communities safe.
Assistant Chief Constables Wendy Middleton, Steve Johnson, Lynn Ratcliff and Chief Superintendent Kate Stephen addressed the 68 recruits as they made their Police Constable declaration at oath of office ceremonies across the country, yesterday, Thursday, 15 May, 2025.
The new officers, 39 men and 29 women, have begun their 16 weeks’ training programme and will be ready for operational deployment on 1 September, 2025.
ACC Middleton addressed probationers at a regional ceremony at Police Scotland Headquarters, Tulliallan while ACC Johnson addressed the new recruits at the Scottish Police Training Centre in Jackton.
ACC Ratcliff addressed probationers as they were sworn in at a ceremony in Inverness and Chief Superintendent Kate Stephen witnessed probationers being sworn in at a ceremony in Aberdeen.
Assistant Chief Constable Wendy Middleton said: “Swearing the oath of office of Constable in Scotland is an important milestone in the career of a police officer.
“Our new probationers have stepped forward to support the wellbeing of Scotland’s communities and taken on the responsibilities which accompany that commitment.
“Becoming a police officer is a deeply considered decision – our latest recruits are signing up to a hugely rewarding and demanding career and a job like no other.
“On behalf of Police Scotland’s Chief Officer Team, I thank them for joining the policing family and for the meaningful contribution they will make to achieving our 2030 Vision of safer communities, less crime, supported victims and a thriving workforce.”
Of the intake, three have previous military experience, six have additional language skills including Spanish, Punjabi and Urdu, and nine have relatives who are serving as either police officers or members of Police Scotland staff.
