Road safety patrols - Benbecula
A total of 40 vehicles were stopped as part of a road policing operation on Benbecula.
Road policing officers supported the Eilean Dorcha Festival to carry out road safety patrols between Friday, 25 and Sunday, 27 July, 2025.
A 30-year-old man was arrested in connection with driving whilst under the influence of alcohol and disqualified in the early hours of Saturday, 26 July. Enquiries are ongoing.
Another 24 offences were dealt with by way of Fixed Penalty Notices or reports to the Procurator Fiscal. These included speeding, careless driving, driving with no MOT test certificate, driving with no insurance, driving whilst using a mobile phone, not wearing a seatbelt, vehicle in a dangerous condition and dangerously carrying passengers.
Two vehicles were also seized in relation to insurance offences.
Road Policing Constable Ben Cruickshank of the Highland and Islands Road Policing Unit said: “Keeping all road users safe is a top priority for Police Scotland.
“It was especially alarming to see a small child being carried on a passenger’s knee, as this poses serious risk of injury or worse if the vehicle was involved in a crash.
“A moment’s lapse in concentration can lead to serious injury or even death.
“We urge everyone to stay alert and drive responsibly, as crashes can have devastating consequences for all involved.
He added: “We want to reassure our communities, especially those in more rural areas, that road safety is a high priority for the division. We are dedicated to keeping people safe on our roads and will continue to carry out these targeted patrols as part of Operation CEDAR - Challenge, Educate, Detect and Reduce.”
