John Monteith jailed for domestic and sexual offences in Dumfries and Galloway

A man has been jailed for the domestic and sexual abuse of a woman in Dumfries and Galloway.

John Monteith, 58, was sentenced to nine years and six months in prison at Inverness High Court on Wednesday, 17 December, 2025.

He was previously convicted at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Wednesday, 5 November, 2025.

The offences took place in the Sanquhar area between 1986 and 2021.
Monteith was also given a lifelong non-harassment order in respect of his victim.

Detective Sergeant Stephanie Brown said: “Monteith is an abusive individual who subjected his victim to years of horrific offending, and he will now face the consequences of his actions.

"Domestic abuse can cause lasting harm and tackling this type of offending remains a priority for Police Scotland.

"I would encourage anyone who has experienced domestic or sexual abuse to report it to Police Scotland. Every report is taken seriously and will be fully investigated, with support available from partner agencies, including Rape Crisis Scotland and Scottish Women's Aid."
