Police officers 'justified' in using Taser on armed man

Published 13 March 2019

Police officers who used a baton launcher and Taser on an armed man in Troon were justified to use such measures an independent report has concluded.

The incident was reviewed by the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner, which is standard procedure when a Taser or baton round is used.

Officers were called to North Shore Road in Troon at around 7am on Saturday 2 June, 2018 following reports from the public about a man with a knife behaving in an erratic manner.

Local officers attended along with armed police officers who attempted to negotiate with the man.

As the man’s behaviour became more erratic and concerning, armed police officers discharged a baton round in an effort to stop the man harming himself, however his unpredictable behaviour continued and Taser was discharged to allow officers to detain the man for his own safety, as well as their own and the wider public.

Chief Superintendent Matt Richards, Head of Specialist Services said: “I welcome the PIRC findings, and see it as further evidence of the professional and measured response our armed officers show on a regular basis. Any action they take will be carefully considered and the use of force will be a last resort and only when absolutely necessary. The professional and effective response to this volatile situation has ensured that the man involved did not come to any harm and any threat to the public was minimised.

“When faced with unpredictable situations like this, armed officers will always consider or utilise other options before using their specialist equipment, and the safety of the public and those involved will always be our priority when responding to such incidents.”
