A man who raped a 19-year-old woman has been sentenced to seven years in prison.
Mark Adams, aged 56, raped the 19-year-old in a camper van in Edinburgh’s Regent Street in the early hours of Thursday, August 10, 2017.
Adams lured his victim into his camper van as she walked home after a night out at the Edinburgh Fringe and Festival. Once she was within his vehicle he attacked her.
He was sentenced today (Tuesday, March 26) at Glasgow High Court.
Following an investigation by Police Scotland’s Criminal Investigation Department, Adams was detained and charged on Wednesday, August 22, 2017, before being convicted on Tuesday, February 26, 2019, at Edinburgh High Court.
Detective Inspector Kevin Harkins of Edinburgh’s Criminal Investigation Department said: “Adams is an arrogant man who preyed upon a woman as she walked home. He is a highly opportunistic offender who has no regard for those he attacks.
“Police Scotland treats all reports of sexual crime with the utmost seriousness, regardless of when the offences occurred. We will investigate the matter thoroughly and professionally, fully supported by partner agencies to ensure those responsible are brought to justice."
"I would like to commend the victim in this case for her courage and I hope that after today's sentencing, she is now able to move on from this horrendous ordeal"
