The 37-year-old man was uninjured and walked back towards Kelso after the incident, along Edinburgh Road and then onto Roxburgh Street, before alerting the police.
A 38-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and released pending further enquiries.
Detective Constable Andrew Loughlin, Galashiels Police Station, said:
“We are trying to piece together exactly what happened here and are appealing for anyone who may have been driving along this stretch of road yesterday afternoon who may have information to come forward.
“Do you remember seeing the blue coloured MG parked at the side of the road? Or a man walking back along the road towards Kelso?
“You may have dash-cam footage that has vital information so we would ask you to check back and come forward with this.”
