How to report a crime
How to report a crime to Police Scotland online, by phone, or in person, and what to expect after you report something to us.
If it's an emergency
Call 999 now if:
- someone's in danger
- the incident is happening now
Call 999 BSL if you use British Sign Language (BSL).
Do not go near the suspects or try to stop them. Keep yourself safe.
If it's not an emergency
If you want to tell us about anything that’s not an emergency, you can report it:

Report crimes online
You can use our online forms to report:
- use our online reporting form to report stalking, harassment, domestic abuse, or hate crime
- use our contact form to tell us about anything else (this is not treated as an emergency)
- report using Contact Scotland BSL if you use British Sign Language (BSL)
- report shoplifting from a shop you work in
Report by phone
If you want to report something by phone, you can:
- call 101
- report using Contact Scotland BSL if you use British Sign Language (BSL)
- call the UK Anti-Terrorist Hotline if you think someone might be planning terrorism (phone: 0800 789 321)
Report in-person
You can speak to your community policing team in-person, on the phone, or by email.
Report anonymously
You can choose to stay anonymous when you report a crime to us.
To do this:
- if you phone us: tell the person you’re speaking to you want to be anonymous
- if you report online: select the option to remain anonymous

What to expect when you make a report
When you first call us:
- you need to tell us about what’s happened
- we’ll talk to you about what help you need
If it’s an emergency
If you need help now, we may:
- send local officers to you
- call you back to ask you for more information
- refer you to another service for help
If it’s not an emergency
If you do not need help now, we might:
- set up a meeting with local officers
- contact you to create a crime report or to give advice and support (this could be a phone call, email, or text)
