Forced marriage
If you or someone you know has experienced forced marriage, read our advice and learn how to get support. You can also report it to us online, by phone, or in person
What forced marriage is
Forced marriage is where one or both people do not give full and free consent to the marriage. The consent cannot be “free” because “force” is a factor.
Force can be:
- physical abuse or threats
- verbal abuse or threats
- emotional abuse or threats
- taking advantage of someone not being able to consent
- taking advantage of someone not understanding
People under 16, and some adults with additional needs, cannot give consent.
Forcing someone to marry is a crime in Scotland.
Forced marriage is not the same as arranged marriage
In an arranged marriage, families help choose a partner. However, the marriage has the consent of both parties.
