What online harassment is
Online harassment is harassment that does not take place in person. It can be by:
- text
- instant messaging
- social media
- online gaming
- other websites, such as forums
It can also include identity theft and creating fake profiles of someone.
The person harassing you may try to gather information about you to keep harassing you, or to encourage others to harass you.
How to report online harassment
If you want to tell us about online harassment, you can report it online, by phone, or in person.
What to do if online harassment happens
If you experience online harassment, you can:
- report it to the social media or website it was shared on
- save or screenshot posts and messages (to give to us when you report it)
- block the sender
If you report it to us, it can help if you record:
- what was said or sent
- what platform, website, or app it was on
- when it was sent or posted
- the sender's name or username (if known)

Legal advice and advocacy
You can get support with legal advice from:
- National Stalking Advocacy Service provides support and works to protect people who have experienced stalking

Ways to prevent online harassment
To help avoid online harassment, you can:
- make your social media accounts private
- limit who can message you on social media
- avoid accepting messages or friend requests from people you do not know
- restrict or block accounts that make you feel uncomfortable
